How to Improve the Air Quality Inside Your Home

After a long, hard day, you should know that you are coming home to a safe, comfortable home. You should know that your home has good indoor air quality for your overall health and well-being. To ensure that the air inside of your home is clean, consider the following tips.

1. Keep Your HVAC Filter Changed Regularly

Your heating and air conditioning system contain either a washable or disposable air filter. Regardless of the type of air filter that your system holds, it must be cleaned or changed regularly. As a general rule, your filter should be cleaned or changed every three months. However, if you have pets in the home, you should inspect the filter every two months since dander and fur can accumulate quickly. If someone in the home has allergies, the filter should be checked and replaced more frequently.

2. Add Houseplants Inside the Home

Studies have been shown to help remove impurities and certain chemicals from the air inside of your home. If you do not have a green thumb, don't worry, as many plants are forgiving and do not require a lot of maintenance from you. For instance, the heart-leaf philodendron is great in varying lighting conditions and is virtually impossible to kill. Another great houseplant for varying lighting conditions is the bamboo palm.

3. Minimize Dust Mites

Dust mites are tiny microscopic pests that live in skin cells and dust on carpet, fabrics, and bedding throughout the home. They can result in respiratory reactions for sensitive individuals. Dust mites should be reduced in the home as much as possible. The best way to do this is to keep all fabrics washed regularly. When possible, use hypoallergenic covers on your mattresses and pillows, use slipcovers on your furniture, vacuum your rugs and carpets, and take shoes off at the door.

4. Maintain the HVAC System

Your heating and air conditioning system is designed to help control the indoor temperature, dehumidify the air, and filter various allergens from the air inside your home. All of these processes work together to improve the indoor air quality. If you fail to have your system maintained regularly by a professional, these processes may not be as efficient.

These are just a few actionable tips to consider. If you would like to learn more about how to maintain proper indoor air quality, consult with an HVAC contractor in your local area.
